If you are not aware of this story, there was a very homophobic note sent by a mother in response to a birthday invite from two gay dad and that note was posted on the K-98 Facebook page. It was apparently all just a hoax concocted by the New York radio station. K-98.3’s Steve Harper and his morning show co-host Leeana have now apologized for the very elaborate hoax they were able to initially pull off.
It all began when the story of two gay dads were having a birthday party for their daughter, Sophia and a mom responded to the their invitation for her son to attend the party with a very homophobic message. K-98.3 publicized the fake note from the mother and it went viral leading to outrage across the nation and in the media. The note read: “Tommy will NOT attend. I do not believe in what you do and will not subject my innocent son to your ‘lifestyle.’ I’m sorry Sophia has to grow up this way. If you have an issue or need to speak to me:” The note also included a phone number that was erased.
Well, as we said earlier it was all faked and cooked up by Steve Harper and Leeana, who released an official apology via the stations Facebook page.
“This story was, in fact, totally fictitious, and created by the two of us. This was done without the knowledge of K-98.3 management or ownership,” they wrote. “We were attempting to spur a healthy discourse on a highly passionate topic, but we made a mistake by misleading our listeners into thinking that this specific situation actually existed.”
“We are very sorry that we perpetuated this falsehood, even after it was clear that it had taken on a ‘life of its own,'” they concluded. “We deeply apologize for violating your trust, and we will work hard to regain that trust.”
After the truth came out, many of the station’s listeners and others were highly upset calling the hoax a cheap publicity stunt.
