Three Men Charged in Fatal CA Tourist Robbery

Introduction

Three men from Los Angeles County, accused of robbing and killing a New Zealand tourist at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, appeared in court this afternoon.

Court Appearance

The suspects, accused of the death of 68-year-old Trish McKay, were in court for the first time. Several family members of the defendants were present, with some blowing kisses during the proceedings. The Mayor of Newport Beach also attended to represent the McKay family.

Details of the Incident

The trio allegedly attempted to steal a Rolex watch from Doug McKay at gunpoint. During the robbery, Trish McKay was thrown into the road as the suspects went for her shopping bags. A good Samaritan tried to intervene but was forced to stop when one of the suspects started shooting.

Suspects’ Criminal Records

Court records revealed that one of the suspects had avoided prison time after a 2022 arrest for armed robbery involving a gun and a Rolex watch. He served only five days in jail due to a plea deal that put him on probation.

The suspects did not enter pleas during the arraignment and are being held without bail. They are expected to enter pleas on August 1st. If convicted, they are eligible for the death penalty or a maximum sentence of life without parole.
