(AUSTIN, Texas) — Huston-Tillotson University officials are proud to present the Third Annual <div> hackathon, the only youth and diversity-focused hackathon held in the United States that is 100-percent organized and operated by students of color.
The Third Annual <div> hackathon, scheduled for March 10-11, on the Huston-Tillotson University campus, has a mission to assist millennials of color in recognizing that they can be more than consumers of technology—they too can be creators, innovators, and disruptors of tomorrow’s technology. The <div> hackathon is open to all high school and enrolled college students. Coding experience is not necessary, and mentors are still needed to assist students as they develop their applications.
What can you expect at <div>hackathon 3.0?
- Over 234 participants (65 Students, 40 Mentors, 100 Spectators, 13 Huston-Tillotson University Student Organizers, five Guest Judges, 10 Huston-Tillotson University faculty and staff members, and participation by Huston-Tillotson University President, Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette
- A group of 65 students from diverse backgrounds, creating mobile apps that disrupt the Business, Health, Education, and Entertainment sectors
- A supportive, engaging, and curriculum-based environment
- Tech talks that will share new product knowledge, career survival skills, and the power of personal branding with students as well as opportunities to network!
At the Second Annual <div> hackathon, the V for Vendetta team of Cydnei Mathis and Osahumen Aghasomwan created the winning mobile application. Mathis, a 10th grader at Eastside Memorial High School, and Aghasomwan, a first year HT student, created a mobile application designed to improve minority accessibility to health care. The app allowed users to enter a price range for the health services they could afford in order to identify the closest clinic within that range.
Huston-Tillotson University, located in the heart of East Austin, is home to diverse student population that is 72% African American, 17% Hispanic, 6% white and 4% international.
