PPM for May and June 18-34

Charlamagne /WPHI, May, 12th place to 7th Place in June
Big Boy’s Neighborhood/WUSL, May, 9th place to 10th Place in June

Elroy Smith is one of my favorite urban programmers. I love when people think out of the box like I do. Looks like his gamble on a local morning show is paying off.  Elroy is on top of a new trend that by the middle of next year, will be present in several markets to programmers who are bold enough to tell the heads at the corps(e) to wake up and fast forward to 2009. Sure the economy is hurting urban radio BUT SO IS THE PRODUCT!!!. The day has come to see LOCAL, NEW, YOUNG, MORNING HOSTS AT URBAN RADIO.  It is the ONLY way urban radio is going to survive in these economic times and it’s the BEST head start, motivator and kickoff for the rest of the shifts. GIVE ME A STATION TO PROGRAM!

Several months ago, I mentioned that there was a syndicated show that was in trouble I didn’t mention which show it was but I did talk to Citadel Media about it. They nervously denied the show was in any sort of trouble and that it was doing extremely well.

I also asked several of my programmers about Big Boy’s Neighborhood…

Big Boy recently lost New York and now Philadelphia’s WUSL has dropped it after the most recent June PPM where Charlamagne leveled the neighborhood for a new local foundation. WUSL got a swift kick in their PPM ass and realized they need to get a local host to compete with Charlamagne’s fast-growing appeal… I like Big Boy and perhaps it’s not his show but just the new trend. Local radio MUST make a comeback and Elroy’s move is forcing the hand of WUSL to do the same thing. It would be ABSURD for WUSL to pick up another syndicated show to compete with Charlamagne. So this means another YOUNG urban LOCAL jock will get a chance to shine. That would be great news.

  1. BBN isn’t losing affiliates . ..the stations who are going with local radio are losing Big Boy. I feel bad for those stations who don’t have good taste. Quality radio is hard to find and for the most part, local radio blows . .. .
