Hit-and-run driver kills five-year-old boy

Parents watched in horror as their five-year-old son was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The child died Thursday in the hit-and-run collision in Queens, NY police said.

The parents and their child, Jonathan Martinez, were crossing the street at 100th Street and McIntosh Street around 5:30 p.m. when he was struck and killed by a white Dodge Ram truck, said authorities. The driver did not stop.

The youngster suffered severe trauma to his head and torso. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

The young boy was struck by the truck close to a school. Some teens who were outside playing basketball saw the accident when it happened.

“He got hit by a car, and there was blood all over his face. They were performing CPR on him,” said witness Ayaan Ahmed. “He was a little kid, so it was sad to see that happen.”

The neighborhood is often filled with children, and usually, people are careful when they pass through, said neighbors.

“It’s a lot of kids going back and forth because the school is right on the corner,” said neighbor Rita Suarez.
