Looks like American Idol has really broken the old industry standard.
Let’s face it, 10 years ago, Adam Lambert would have been escorted out of a record label by security (laugh) and never been signed to a label being the kind of act that he is… but for that matter, Fantasia Burrino and Jennifer Hudson would have been passed over too. All 3 for not fitting the “mold.” Shit, stevie wonder would have been escorted out of a label if he was a new act 10 years ago.
In Adam’s case, fear from the labels would have been extreme isolation of a potential female fan base from being an openly gay singer… but it looks like times have changed even the hip hop community uses extreme caution before the saying certain words once spewed all over their recordings as insults that could now literally end their careers in a matter of days. Adam’s unique musical style and recently critisized over-the-top performance skyrocketed his album “For Your Entertainment” (19 Recordings/RCA) debut’s at #3 on the Billboard Charts with 198,469 albums sold amidst the controversy. Next, there will be a transgendered black singer for urban radio audiences (laugh). I could see urban PDs reaching for their Bibles now.
