Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Shelton State Community College’s Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) was recognized at the honor society’s virtual convention on the evening of April 17. The annual gala, held virtually due to current travel regulations, recognized individual members and chapters for their outstanding work.
Shelton State’s Alpha Epsilon Iota chapter ended the academic year ranked in the Top 100 out of 1,289 chapters worldwide. Additionally, the group won a Hallmark Award for its College Project (which addressed graduation and completion rates) and was named a distinguished chapter for the second year in a row.
Shelton State student officer Katelyn Burkhalter was named a Distinguished Chapter Officer. Burkhalter was a leader for the chapter’s Honors in Action project that focused on the issue of infant mortality. Dr. Kevin Windham, one of the chapter’s advisors alongside Mrs. Shywanda Moore, was recognized with a Continued Excellence Award.
These awards mark 2019-2020 as one of the most decorated years PTK has experienced at Shelton State. This year’s PTK officers included Obi Bruno Da Silva Ndubueze, Charles “Tre” Butler, Makaila Anthony, Anna Kate Baxter, Mary “Abbye” Blocker, Matthew Custred, Brooke Gamble, Rachel Waddle, Deedie Bennett, and Mark Chapman who also served as the 2019-2020 Alabama Regional President.
