RADIO TRENDS: Extinct? Ad Time? Cheap DJs?

width=As the industry changes and corporations are looking for ways to save money two trends appear to be on the rise that could affect radio’s PPM negatively…maybe positively.

Full time on air slots are being replaced by part time slots at some stations in an effort to save salaries and benefits. This may not be GREAT news for current full timers but it actually makes great sense and could work to the advantage (and disadvantage) of urban radio. Radio programming will be like TV programming.

This also opens up the door for many Radio DJs to get back in to radio and offers something urban radio has been missing FOREVER….variety, at least from a hosts perspective.

FYI: This is also why The Radio Facts Social Network RFSN must become a full time industry organization so that we can offer health insurance to members in certain regions. Have you joined? Do so here.

The greatest changes in radio are going to start happening this year and at least radio is making an effort to save jobs instead of eliminating them.

Certain Radio DJs are calling stations and offering to work full time for 2/3rds or even half of what the current Radio DJs are making.   Radio is forced to take a look at the concept to save money.

Finally many urban stations are selling time to local churches and other businesses (YIKES THIS is a NIGHTMARE) as a way to save money.
