Ava DuVernay’s Native American Family Drama Coming to NBC

Time flies and time backed by a relentless work ethic and passion usually garners success. I remember when Ava Duvernay used to call the Radio Facts office to promote or push her talent associated with the Duvernay Agency. Fast forward many moons later, Ava Duvernay is one of the most sought out directors in the game.

Ava Duvernay has linked up with NBC to create a first of its kind -drama about a Native American family entitled “Sovereign.” The series, which is scheduled to be piloted, chronicles the lives, loves and loyalties of an Indigenous family struggling to control the future of their tribe against outside forces and themselves. With Duvernay and Bird Runningwater leading the project, written by Sydney Freeland and Shaz Bennett, “Sovereign” marks the first Native American family drama developed for network television. Check out Ava’s post regarding the new potential series.

View this post on Instagram We all deserve to see ourselves on television. Period. Proud to work with Bird Runningwater, Sydney Freeland and Shaz Bennett on the first Native American family drama developed for broadcast television.

SOVEREIGN is built to give you epic tales of power, politics, perseverance and passion ala Dynasty, Dallas and Empire — but with an epic Native cast and creators. Thanks to @nbc for giving this idea a shot and to our partners at @warnerbrostv who support @arraynow’s vision so beautifully. A post shared by Ava DuVernay (@ava) on Oct 23, 2020 at 11:15am PDT
