Kate Nash’s Protest: Touring and Streaming Challenges

In November 2025, Kate Nash staged a protest outside the London offices of major industry players Spotify and Live Nation, bringing attention to the pressing financial issues faced by many working musicians. This demonstration underscored the challenges associated with touring at scale, particularly with rising costs and logistical complexities exacerbated by post-Brexit regulations.

Following her protest, Nash provided testimony to a UK parliamentary select committee in February 2026, detailing significant financial losses incurred during her European tour. She emphasized the critical impact of these losses on mid-career artists, highlighting a growing disconnect between visibility in the industry and financial security. The current streaming model, which redistributes revenue based on total listening shares, has been criticized for favoring global hits over smaller artists, contributing to the financial strain on musicians.

Amid these challenges, grassroots music venues in the UK are also facing dire circumstances. According to a 2025 report from the Music Venue Trust, over half of these venues reported no profits in the previous year, with many shutting down. The closure of small venues, which are vital for nurturing local music scenes and supporting touring artists, has raised concerns about the sustainability of the live music ecosystem.

In response to these issues, various stakeholders in the live music sector have proposed initiatives such as ticket levies on larger shows to fund smaller venues and planning protections for longstanding clubs. Politicians are increasingly scrutinizing streaming payments and exploring ways to better support the live music industry. A fan-led review initiated by MPs aims to gather insights from artists and audiences about the challenges facing the touring sector and grassroots venues.

As the conversation around these challenges continues, the potential consequences for local music scenes and emerging artists remain significant. The ongoing decline in touring opportunities and venue closures could lead to a diminished diversity in the music landscape, ultimately impacting audiences who crave variety and fresh talent.
