Micheal Watkins always wanted to be a doctor, but life led him on a different path, and he ended up a crack addict for 15 years and living on the streets for 20 years.

He had been homeless for 20 years. Fearing things that people take advantage of daily, like finding food and a place to sleep, became an everyday concern, but when his mother died ten years ago, his life changed. He says she believed in him, and he was now at a point where he started to believe in himself.

He decided to change his life. In the process, he earned three college degrees and is now working on his fourth which is a doctorate degree.

He has volunteered for other homeless people and disaster victims, but he states his past continues to haunt him as he cannot be forgiven for crimes he committed while he was homeless and on drugs.

He stated that being of service to others allows him not to always focus on himself, and it allows him to be compassionate towards the needs of others.
