Dave Chappelle’s Modest Response to Saving A NPR Station in Ohio (video)

I understand Dave Chappelle’s desire for a simple life away from the industry because I’m doing it too an it does bring an incredible level of peace. LA makes a lot more sense when you leave it and treat the entire city like work because that is what it is.

Dave literally lives In Yellow Springs, Ohio and in this video he talks about choosing a more grounded lifestyle and why he stepped in to save a local NPR station in his community because he believed the voices and talent there mattered. Imagine if other celebrities moved to smaller and mid sized less expensive towns and invested in them like Dave is doing here. The station wouldn’t have had a chance to be saved had he not become a huge fan of it.

With over 1.3 million views since April 15, 2026, this episode of NPR’s Newsmakers dives into a deeper side of Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle has become the kind of cultural phenomenon you had to watch to stay in the loop, or his stand-up specials that feel almost underground in spirit even while selling out massive venues. But that’s not what this conversation is really about.

Michel Martin sat down with Chappelle to explore something more personal and unexpected: why he invested $15 million of his own money to build a new home for WYSO, a small public radio station in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

She also pressed him on what some might see as contradictions, how someone known for fearless, no-holds-barred comedy reconciles performing in places where free speech can be restricted. And perhaps most interestingly, she asked why someone with the means to live anywhere in the world would choose to settle down in a quiet, small town.

The interview, recorded at WYSO’s new station, reveals a more reflective side of Chappelle. Martin notes that if you’re expecting him to “perform” his usual persona, you might be surprised. But if you’re open to hearing a thoughtful, deeply funny person engage seriously with ideas like free speech, the role of comedy, and personal purpose, it’s worth your time.

And when it comes to Yellow Springs, he might be onto something. It’s kind of special. Though honestly, it feels like he’d rather not have everyone figure that out just yet.
