Helicopter Search Finds Missing Skier Hilaree Nelson

A helicopter search has recovered the body of missing US extreme skier Hilaree Nelson. Nelson went missing days ago after she fell off the world’s eighth-highest mountain while skiing down the massive slope with her partner Jim Morrison. Her body was recovered Wednesday and transported to Nepal’s capital.

The 49-year-old skier disappeared on Monday while skiing down from the 26,775-foot summit of Mount Manaslu when she plunged off the mountain. Her body was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu, where doctors are expected to perform an autopsy. After failed attempts on Monday and Tuesday to locate Nelson’s body because of bad weather, helicopter rescuers were able to find her on Wednesday.

A Nepalese man was killed, and several other climbers were injured by an avalanche at a lower elevation on the same mountain. During Nepal’s autumn climbing season, hundreds of climbers and their local guides attempted to reach the summit. In 2018, Nelson, from Telluride, Colorado, and Morrison, from Tahoe, California, both extreme skiers, reached the summit of Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest mountain.

During autumn, Nepal’s government issued permits to 504 climbers, mostly climbing Mount Manaslu.
