A federal judge has ruled that Donald Trump must use contingency funds to distribute SNAP benefits to 42 million Americans.
The ruling comes after two successful lawsuits, including one filed by Democratic attorneys general, challenging Trump’s attempt to withhold the funds during a government shutdown.
For weeks, Trump had threatened to stop providing food assistance, using it as political leverage in the ongoing shutdown.
This move came months after his administration pushed through a budget bill that made the largest cuts to food assistance in U.S. history, directly impacting millions of Americans. Speaker Mike Johnson also admitted that Republicans view SNAP benefits as a tool for political maneuvering.
At the heart of the issue are 16 million children facing hunger due to the uncertainty around food assistance. Although the Trump administration has contingency funds available to cover SNAP, it chose not to allocate them, sparking backlash from both Democrats and legal challenges.
In response to the ruling, Democratic National Committee Communications Director Rosemary Boeglin pointed out that the Trump administration’s refusal to fund food assistance is a matter of choice, not necessity.
She criticized the use of children’s welfare as a political bargaining chip, emphasizing that the government has the resources but has chosen not to act.
