Julia Jacklin Announces the Gem, Shares First Single From New Album

Julia Jacklin is back with a new album that gives publishers, songwriters, and rights holders an immediate next move: fresh release activity, a new label rollout, and a tour already on the calendar. The Australian singer-songwriter has announced The Gem, her first new album in four years, due Sept. 25 via 4AD.

A new era starts with a fuzzy rocker

Ahead of the album, Jacklin released “Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon),” a euphoric rocker built on fuzzy guitar riffs and Eighties jangle rock vibes. The song serves as the first preview of The Gem, which is also Jacklin’s debut release on 4AD.

The record was made in Melbourne

The Gem is Jacklin’s fourth studio album, following 2022’s Pre Pleasure and 2019’s Crushing. She made the album entirely in Melbourne and produced it with Robert Muinos. The record takes its name from a bar in Collingwood, and Jacklin cut it at Muinos’ Rat Shack Studios, which sits right above the Gem.

Jacklin said in a statement that the album’s title connected to the process of making the record. She said she wanted to love and be loved, but also be free, and described the album as a metaphor for the process of digging and trusting she would find something.

Tour dates follow the rollout

Jacklin recently announced a tour that begins in North America in San Diego on Oct. 20. The run will move across the West Coast before stops in Austin, Atlanta, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia on Nov. 21. After that, she will head to the U.K. and Europe.

The Gem track list includes 10 songs: “Brand New,” “God Sometimes,” “If I Had the Hand of God,” “The Hardest Thing,” “Angel Vision,” “Real Life,” “Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon),” “You Turned on the Tap,” “Walk on Me,” and “I Wish” featuring the Maes.

What to watch next: the Sept. 25 release of The Gem and the start of Jacklin’s North American tour on Oct. 20.
