BOISE, Idaho — The New Year has officially arrived in Idaho, with thousands gathering for the 13th annual Idaho Potato Drop. Held in front of the state capitol building, the event marked the start of 2026 with energy and excitement.

Sean Hancock, a local attendee, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I love bringing in the new year with everybody in Boise. The energy’s insane.” This year is particularly significant, as it coincides with America’s 250th birthday, leading to a special fireworks display that honored the nation’s history and armed forces. The dazzling show lasted for an impressive 20 minutes.

In addition to the fireworks, the celebration featured a rail jam competition that showcased the talents of young skiers and snowboarders. Fifteen-year-old Theo Grant, a standout participant, shared his excitement about the event, saying, “Had more than a blast. It was the greatest time ever. I love competitions. It gets you amped up, and the crowd out here is amazing. Just what a great event, and skiing is my passion.”

The Idaho Potato Drop has become a cherished tradition, drawing participants and families from across the region. As the evening progressed, the anticipation for the midnight countdown filled the air, with attendees ready to welcome the new year surrounded by friends and family.
