This is the first time I’ve actually heard a homeless man have a voice and speak about his living situation. He explains why he doesn’t want shelter and actually gives a pretty good reason.
“Q” from St. Louis has been living in LA for about three years, and he states that he has turned down the opportunity to live in the tiny homes because he feels that they are like concentration camps.
He also states that living in an apartment is not an option because he does a lot of welding and uses machines to build things as he did in this house.
It appears he needs more of an opportunity to start his own business than he does shelter by the city, and obviously, in his case, everything else would probably fall into place.
On the surface, he does not appear to be mentally ill, just someone who came to LA for a new life and has had a few setbacks. These days, this makes up a LOT of the homeless population in the city.
He built the house on wheels so that he could move it when police confront him to move, as they do every two weeks so that they don’t take it down. Business owners in the area, for the most part, don’t have a problem with it.
The newswoman asks questions about him stealing electricity from the city, and her position is typical of certain people who have no idea or concept of what it’s like to be a black man. After hearing his story, she then acquiesces by calling him “resourceful.” She’s right about that part, he is.
