Massive Carjacking Bust in Toronto: 100+ Arrests

Overview of Investigation

Toronto police, along with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and other Greater Toronto Area (GTA) forces, have announced significant progress in a major carjacking investigation, resulting in the recovery of stolen vehicles and numerous arrests.

Recovery of Stolen Vehicles

Between September 2023 and March 2024, the provincial carjacking Joint Task Force recovered 177 stolen vehicles valued at $10 million. An additional 23 stolen vehicles valued at $5 million were recovered after March, bringing the total to 200 vehicles.

Arrests and Charges

The investigation led to 124 arrests and nearly 750 charges being laid. Police seized eight firearms during the operations. Despite a 28% decrease in auto thefts in Toronto in 2024, carjackings and related violent crimes continue to be a major concern.

Connection to Organized Crime

Police revealed that the network of criminals involved in these thefts operates locally, provincially, and internationally, with stolen vehicles traced to Africa, the Middle East, and South America. Many offenders were found to be underage or out on bail at the time of their arrest.

Concerns Over Bail and Recidivism

Law enforcement officials expressed concern that 44% of those arrested were out on bail when apprehended, and 61% were subsequently released on bail again. This highlights the challenges in preventing recidivism among offenders involved in violent carjackings and auto thefts.

Ongoing Efforts and Public Safety

Police emphasized that stealing vehicles remains a significant generator for organized crime and called for a collective effort to stop the violence associated with these thefts. The increase in home invasions, violent robberies, and gun violence linked to carjackings underscores the need for continued vigilance and comprehensive strategies to address the issue.
