YouTube Music has unveiled a new artificial intelligence-driven playlist generator exclusive to its Premium subscribers on iOS and Android platforms. This innovative feature allows users to create personalized playlists by simply describing their music preferences through text or voice prompts. Accessible via the Library tab’s ‘New’ button, this tool aligns YouTube Music with similar offerings from competitors such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer, which have previously introduced comparable functionalities.
The rollout of the playlist generator coincides with YouTube Music’s initiative to enhance its Premium subscription services. Recently, the platform has begun restricting song lyrics access for free users as part of an experimental approach affecting a small percentage of ad-supported accounts. Despite these changes, lyrics remain accessible to the majority of free users.
YouTube Music has emerged as a significant growth contributor for Alphabet, with its subscription services—including YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, and NFL Sunday Ticket—generating approximately $20 billion annually. The company reported a total of 325 million paying users across its subscription offerings as of Q4 2025, showcasing a robust demand for these services, particularly amid the rising interest in AI-driven features.
Recent earnings calls highlighted that while transitioning users from ad-supported models to YouTube Music and Premium may slightly impact ad revenues, it positively influences overall business growth. Executives noted that AI is playing a transformative role for content creators and viewers on the platform, with over a million channels actively utilizing AI creation tools daily. This includes YouTube’s experimental AI music commentary feature, which provides engaging commentary between tracks on playlists, further enhancing the listener experience.
