WEMU, the public radio station affiliated with Eastern Michigan University, has confirmed the upcoming retirements of long-serving broadcasters David Fair and Michael Jewett, effective June 30, 2026. Fair, who has been with the station since 1994, serves as the News Director and host of Morning Edition, while Jewett has recently marked 42 years with WEMU as the Senior Music Announcer and Operations Manager.
David Fair began his tenure at WEMU as the part-time host of All Things Considered before becoming the full-time host of Morning Edition and later assuming the role of News Director in 2012. He played a significant role in establishing various content partnerships, including award-winning segments focused on environmental issues and local community matters. His extensive experience includes interviewing a wide range of figures from local newsmakers to environmental advocates.
Michael Jewett began his career at WEMU hosting Sunday Best, a classic jazz program, and has since become a prominent figure in the station’s music programming. He currently hosts both morning and afternoon jazz shows and is known for his commitment to promoting local musicians and introducing new recordings. Jewett has also been involved in the Detroit Jazz Festival and has contributed to national broadcasts of the event.
WEMU plans to initiate the search for replacements for both positions in the coming weeks, as the station prepares to transition following the departures of these key figures who have significantly shaped its programming and community presence.
