The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents has officially approved the renaming of the university’s public radio station broadcast facility to The Timko Broadcast Center at Halle Library. This decision honors Art Timko, the former general manager of WEMU 89.1, recognizing his more than 40 years of leadership and service to the station.
The relocation of WEMU’s broadcast center to Halle Library marks a significant strategic move for the station, which previously operated out of King Hall for 48 years. The new facility enhances operational functionality and technological capabilities, positioning WEMU closer to the university’s core academic and cultural activities. This move is expected to increase the station’s visibility and accessibility for students and faculty.
With the upgrade to a modern facility equipped with 21st-century technology, WEMU is poised to expand its offerings beyond traditional broadcasting. The new capabilities will enable the station to engage in podcasting, video production, in-studio interviews, and live music performances, thereby broadening its reach and enhancing its service to the community.
The Board of Regents acknowledged Timko’s significant contributions to the station, including his leadership roles at the national level and his efforts in bolstering WEMU’s reputation as a trusted public media institution. WEMU has served as an essential source of news and cultural programming for over 60 years, and the renaming to The Timko Broadcast Center reflects a commitment to maintaining high standards in public media.
