Queensland Music Awards 2026 Set for Gold Coast Debut

BRISBANE, Australia — The Queensland Music Awards (QMAs) are making a significant shift in 2026, relocating to the vibrant Gold Coast. Scheduled for April 22, the ceremony will take place at Miami Marketta, marking a historic first for the event as it steps outside its traditional Brisbane venue.

Kris Stewart, CEO of QMusic, which organizes the QMAs with support from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, expressed enthusiasm about this change. “This year, the QMAs returns to its roots,” he stated, emphasizing a focus on the essence of music and community. The event aims to foster an informal atmosphere that prioritizes the celebration of music and camaraderie among attendees.

The decision to host the awards in the Gold Coast comes after a controversial incident at last year’s event held at Fortitude Music Hall. The backlash stemmed from a jazz award win that sparked political discourse, leading to the Brisbane City Council withdrawing A$25,000 ($18,000) in funding and raising concerns about the awards being influenced by political agendas.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has warmly welcomed the QMAs, highlighting the region’s appeal as a fitting backdrop for the awards. “Why wouldn’t the Queensland Music Awards be hosted in Australia’s very own Hollywood?” he remarked, playfully referencing the Gold Coast suburb of Miami.

Since its inception in 2006, the QMAs have recognized both emerging talents and established artists in Queensland, with categories evaluated by over 100 industry professionals. Major awards include lifetime achievement, album of the year, and song of the year, with winners honored through plaques in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

This year’s nominees feature a diverse lineup, including Jem Cassar-Daley, Dami Im, and The Jungle Giants, among others. Additionally, local artists will benefit from A$60,000 ($43,000) allocated for scholarships and awards named after music legends, which will be announced at a special event on March 25.

Stewart concluded by reflecting on the evolving music industry, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the authentic spirit that has defined the QMAs. The 2026 ceremony promises to be a celebration of the local music scene and its influential artists.
