Atlanta Drum Academy Permit Crisis After Police

Police Called to Practice Session

Parents and leaders of the Atlanta Drum Academy were taken aback when police were called during a Saturday practice at Macquarie Park in Fayette County. According to the academy’s Executive Director, James Ryles, this incident highlights the urgent need for a dedicated rehearsal space.

Incident Details

The practice session had barely begun when someone contacted the police. An officer arrived and informed Ryles that a permit was required to practice in the park, a fact that Ryles was previously unaware of. The interaction with the police was civil, but the underlying issue was the disruption caused by the call.

Current Practice Arrangements

Typically, the Atlanta Drum Academy practices at a business location in Riverdale, which is owned by a parent of one of the students. However, when this space is unavailable, the academy is forced to find alternative locations, which can be challenging and costly. Ryles noted the significant expenses involved in renting rehearsal spaces, many of which are often underutilized.

About Atlanta Drum Academy

Founded in 2011, the Atlanta Drum Academy serves 65 students, some as young as three years old. The academy has had a busy schedule, with ten performances in June alone and another one scheduled for the following day.

The Need for a Permanent Space

Ryles emphasized the importance of securing a permanent rehearsal space to avoid future incidents like the one at Macquarie Park. He pointed out that providing a consistent practice location keeps nearly 40 children engaged in positive activities, preventing them from getting into trouble.

Call for Support

For those interested in supporting the Atlanta Drum Academy and helping them find a permanent rehearsal space, more information is available on the FOX 5 News website.
