With nearly 20 years of experience at WMG, including the first five years in London, Steven is set to take charge of UMGs internal and external communications beginning January 26. He will operate out of New York and will report directly to Will Tanous, UMG’s chief administrative officer and a former colleague from WMG.

Tanous expressed confidence in Steven’s capabilities, stating, I know first-hand the extraordinary skill and dedication James brings to strategic communications and storytelling. His love of music and broad experience across media and technology makes him an ideal fit for UMG as we enter the next phase of growth.

Sir Lucian Grainge, UMGs chairman and CEO, welcomed Steven to the team, noting the importance of acquiring someone with a robust background in communications. He remarked, Given Wills broadened role, it was important that we brought in a communications executive with experience and perspective one who was able to step right in to help us continue to shape the future of music.

During his tenure at WMG, Steven played a key role in several major initiatives, including the company’s successful IPO in 2020 and overseeing a smooth leadership transition in 2022. His industry acumen extends beyond his past role at WMG, as he is also a board member of the Recording Industry Association of America.

Steven began his career at Warner Music in London in 2007, later moving to New York in 2012. He climbed the ranks to become senior vice president of communications and marketing before taking on his role as chief communications officer in 2015. Before joining WMG, Steven held senior positions at various public relations firms, where he worked with clients across diverse sectors such as technology, entertainment, and automotive.
