In 2014, Joel and Benji Madden ventured into new territory with the release of their studio album under the Madden Brothers name, titled Greetings From California. In a recent interview on the Rolling Stone Uncut podcast, the duo revealed that this project was initially intended to be a Good Charlotte album. However, they faced a significant hurdle: no record label was interested in backing it.
The Maddens shared that 2014 marked a pivotal moment in their careers, as it was the year they decided to step back from the music industry after a decade filled with success, including the release of five albums by Good Charlotte within ten years. Benji reflected on their early experiences, stating, “We hadn’t even been on a plane until we got a record deal,” highlighting the transformative journey they underwent.
Joel elaborated on the harsh realities of the music business, expressing how it can be a painful awakening. He noted, “You didn’t realise until you fuckin’ grow up, and you realise like, ‘Oh no one’s a fuckin’ decision maker but me, I can go make a record and put it out.’” This realization came after they achieved significant financial success, only to feel discarded by the industry. “Everything’s changed, and everyone’s moved on,” he said, emphasizing the common experience many artists face when they feel their time has passed.
The treatment they received from industry insiders led Good Charlotte to reevaluate their identity as musicians, ultimately resulting in the creation of the Madden Brothers album. Joel explained, “We wanted to make another Good Charlotte record. No one wanted us to make another Good Charlotte record… and so we were like, ‘Well, we’re going to make it on our own.’” This determination to forge their own path was a significant turning point for the brothers.
Benji also reflected on a tumultuous period when the band transitioned from a long-time manager to a more prominent figure in the industry, who he felt misled them. Looking back, he expressed gratitude for the challenges they faced, stating, “I look back on it, and now it’s very vulnerable… I’m glad we went through that.” With Good Charlotte set to return in late 2025 with their first album in seven years, Motel Du Cap, the brothers are already discussing their next musical endeavor, signaling a new chapter in their artistic journey.
