Nigerian Talent Transforms Canada’s Music Scene and Culture

A wave of Nigerian talent is reshaping Canada’s music scene, bridging cultures and creating opportunities across continents.

In recent years, the term “Japa,” a Yoruba slang word meaning escape, has come to symbolize the movement of young Nigerians seeking new opportunities abroad. In Canada, particularly in Toronto, this trend is driving a dynamic music movement that connects the cultural pulses of Lagos and Toronto.

At the forefront of this transformation are Nigerian-born executives Ikenna Nwagboso and Camillo Doregos, co-founders of Hi-Way 89 Entertainment. Established in 2025, the record label aims to serve as a vital link between African artists and North America’s music industry. With the rich tapestry of Toronto’s African diaspora, the city has become a fertile ground for artistic expression and collaboration.

Doregos emphasizes that while the African talent in Canada is abundant, the necessary support structures have often been lacking. Hi-Way 89 seeks to fill this gap by developing artists, facilitating music releases, and providing the tools to turn creative endeavors into sustainable businesses. “We noticed that many Africans move here with immense talent, yet they lack the connections and resources to thrive. We’re building a bridge to address this,” he explains.

This bridge not only connects artists from Nigeria to Canada but also fosters a reciprocal relationship. The executives frequently travel between the two countries to maintain these connections. “I just got back from Lagos a few days ago. The business thrives on both sides,” Doregos shares.

The cross-cultural exchange is rapidly transforming Toronto into a creative hub where African musicians can reach new audiences, and Canadian artists can collaborate with their counterparts from Africa. For many young Nigerians, the journey to success often starts online, with platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram serving as vital spaces to build followings and engage with fans across the globe. A track recorded in Toronto can go viral in Lagos, creating a two-way flow of influence and recognition.

The success of Nigerian artists in Canada is evident in the recent surge of their songs on Canadian charts. Hits by artists such as Davido, Burna Boy, and Pheelz have achieved platinum status, signaling a growing appetite for African music within the Canadian market. Data from a study conducted by ADVANCE and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Diversity Institute indicates that Black music accounted for over 65% of streams on major platforms like Apple Music and Spotify in Canada from 2019 to 2022, valued at approximately 339 million Canadian dollars in 2022.

The emotional undertones of this music movement reflect the complexities of migration. While Japa symbolizes a quest for opportunity, it also evokes feelings of loss and dislocation. Artists often express themes of nostalgia and resilience, intertwining their personal migration narratives into sounds that resonate globally.

Nwagboso reflects, “Black music is making significant strides here, but there’s still a gap in representation we aim to fill.” Navigating new markets can be challenging, but Hi-Way 89 has identified key moments that can catalyze success, using the example of Rema’s hit “Calm Down” which exploded after collaborating with Selena Gomez.

To achieve their vision, Hi-Way 89 combines artist development, strategic planning, and data analysis. Doregos emphasizes the importance of community over virality in sustaining careers, stating, “Building connections is what truly lasts.” Their strategy also includes cross-border writing camps, pairing established artists with emerging talent, and engaging directly with streaming services to enhance visibility.

With sessions at studios like The Orange Lounge, where established Nigerian producers work with Canadian talents, Hi-Way 89 is actively merging the musical strengths of both cultures. Nwagboso encourages artists to dream big, saying, “I ask my artists to send me a wish list of whom they’d love to collaborate with. This is a cultural movement, and we’re excited to see it unfold.” What’s emerging in Canada isn’t merely a trend; it’s a vibrant, culturally rich narrative, one that reflects the Japa generation’s determination to redefine success in the music industry.
