SUPERSTAR JANET JACKSON TO BE NAMED A BMI ICON AT THE 2018 BMI R&B/HIP-HOP AWARDS

Evening Celebrates the Previous Year’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriters, Producers, Music Publishers and Administrators on Thursday, August 30th in Atlanta, Georgia radiofacts.com Photo credit: Solaiman Fazel Atlanta, GA, June 26, 2018 – BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), the global leader in rights management, is proud to announce that multiplatinum superstar Janet Jackson will be named a BMI Icon at the 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The event will be held Thursday, August 30th at The Woodruff Arts Center’s Symphony Hall in Atlanta and will be hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President Creative (Atlanta), Catherine Brewton. “As one of the most influential entertainers of all time, Janet Jackson’s artistry and music transcends generations and has inspired many with messages of empowerment that can be heard throughout her rich catalog of music,” said Brewton. “She is the definition of an icon, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.” Jackson joins an elite group of recipients who have received BMI’s Icon Award for their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” Past recipients have included Patti LaBelle, Nile Rodgers, James Brown, Snoop Dogg and Al Green among others. Throughout her groundbreaking career, she’s sold more than 160 million records worldwide, scored seven No. 1 albums, and she’s the only artist in Billboard’s history to have three different albums— Control, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 and janet.—each produce five or more top ten hits on the Hot 100 chart. Jackson is also one of only four artists, alongside Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and U2, to have earned No. 1 albums in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. She has received two Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination, and garnered six GRAMMY® Awards along with dozens of American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards, including this year’s Billboard Icon Award which was her first televised performance in nine years. With no signs of slowing down, Jackson has a series of upcoming summer performances that kick off July 8th in New Orleans at the ESSENCE Festival and go through August 12th in San Francisco at the Outside Lands Music Festival. Throughout the evening, BMI will also salute the songwriters, producers, publishers and administrators of the past year’s 35 most-performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs in the United States from BMI’s repertoire of more than 13 million musical works. Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” Certified Platinum By The RIAA

WITH OVER 1.3 MILLION TRACK EQUIVALENTS SOLD IN THE U.S., OVER 2.6 MILLION TRACK EQUIVALENTS SOLD WORLDWIDE OVER 216 MILLION VIDEO STREAMS IN THREE WEEKS OVER 147 MILLION TRACK STREAMS IN THREE WEEKS “A shocking and brilliantly produced video for the song that’s left fans and music critics scratching their heads for days.” – NPR “A wildly innovative work that rewards repeated views and commands attention, the Hiro Murai-directed video both honors and upends the traditional music video structure.” – Los Angeles Times “The powerful song has made many jaws drop and people have been talking about it nonstop since Gambino’s performance on ‘SNL.’” – Complex Grammy, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning recording artist, actor and producer Childish Gambino’s “This is America” was certified platinum by the RIAA. The song has enjoyed multiple #1s since its cultural takeover with its release May 7th during his stint hosting and performing on “Saturday Night Live.” The track debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his poignant song and captivating video, “This Is America,” according to Nielsen SoundScan and held the top spot two weeks in a row. Internationally, the track debuted on Spotify’s Global Chart and US Chart and reached #1 on iTunes in 45 markets (Top 5 in 63 markets).  In addition, the track continues to hold the #1 spot on the Overall Streaming Chart three weeks in a row, held the #1 spot on the Song Consumption Chart (two weeks in a row), #1 on the Digital Songs Chart (two weeks in a row), and #1 on the Audio On-Demand Chart (two weeks in a row). The Hiro Murai-directed video for “This Is America” has garnered over 216 million views since its release and is currently #1 on YouTube’s U.S. Top Music Videos and U.S. Top Songs, holding strong in that position for three straight weeks since release. The video earned 85.3 million views in its first week on YouTube, making it the biggest first week debut of any video this year and #1 on the YouTube Songs chart in 11 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and more. The video for “This is America” is also tied for the 5th fastest music video to reach 100M views in YouTube history, reaching the mark in under 9 days. NPR describes the provocative visual as “a shocking and brilliantly produced video for the song that’s left fans and music critics scratching their heads for days,” while The Fader proclaims the track as “a whiplash of a song that jolts from celebratory to terrifying, repeatedly — a lot like the news, I guess.”  The Washington Post declares “Watch it once, and your eyes will naturally be drawn to his movements and facial expressions. Watch it again, but focus on the chaos reigning in the background. Watch it a third time, and the reason for this juxtaposition becomes increasingly clear.” Paste predicts, “May is far too early to be crowning a music video of the year, but ‘This Is America’ absolutely warrants that kind of talk.” Stream/purchase/watch “This Is America” – https://smarturl.it/TcIgA *”This Is America” is not the first official single from Childish Gambino’s forthcoming debut album on Wolf + Rothstein/RCA Records.
