Mike Mangini’s sudden arrival in Godsmack is the kind of lineup shift that matters to anyone tracking live performance, touring continuity, and how fast a band can reset after an abrupt exit. For publishers, songwriters, and rights holders, the takeaway is simple: major acts can change personnel quickly, and the touring machine keeps moving.
Godsmack moves fast after Wade Murff’s departure
Ex-Dream Theater and Extreme drummer Mike Mangini has joined Godsmack after the abrupt departure of Wade Murff, who had only just joined the band this year. Mangini made his live debut with the hard rock band on Friday, June 12, in Riverside, Missouri, only six days after Murff left on June 6 to join Black Veil Brides on tour.
Mangini and Godsmack frontman Sully Erna are both natives of Massachusetts, a detail Mangini noted in an Instagram statement posted on the evening of his first show with the band. In that post, Mangini said he was grateful to Erna, Robbie, Sam, and the entire organization for trusting him “with no rehearsal.”
Murff’s exit follows a very short run
Murff’s departure came just over a month after his live debut with Godsmack on May 8. In a recent interview with Heavy Consequence, Erna had spoken highly of Murff and also said that Murff and new guitarist Sam Koltun were being brought in permanently.
Erna said the band would give them the chance to bring in ideas and record on the records, adding that if they could pull their own weight, that would be great.
Mangini arrives with major band history behind him
Mangini spent 13 years in Dream Theater before leaving when original drummer Mike Portnoy returned to the band in 2023. He has since formed the band Monolith.
Godsmack are currently on tour in North America with support from Stone Temple Pilots and Dorothy.
What to watch next: Mangini’s role on the road with Godsmack, and whether the band’s current touring lineup holds steady after this rapid turnover.
