South Jamaica, Queens-raised rapper, songwriter and producer deem spencer releases his sophomore album adultSW!M via drink sum wtr. The 12-track project arrives alongside a new visual for “I will die on your hill” featuring Orion Sun. The album also includes previously released singles “27” featuring DaVionne and “To have it all.”
With additional features from Eliza Moon, KEYAH/BLU, MAVI and DRAM, adultSW!M finds deem spencer continuing to expand his uniquely eclectic sound, utilizing his unusual blend of experiences and influences to tap into a wide swath of moods as diverse and expansive as the New York area itself.
deem spencer shares – Being an artist has allowed me, in a sense, to take my time growing up. Artistic process allows me to take as much time as I need thinking and processing life and releasing. The validation I feel from having an attentive audience encourages me to be more and more vulnerable with each release. On my last project I reached into my childhood for inspiration and my stories were received warmly.
On this album I felt enabled to be vulnerable about this compounded feeling of uncertainty brought on by having to grow up and live through unprecedented times. I contemplated long about the life and legacy I’m building and the future of the world, ultimately accepting that it’s all at the mercy of fate. The album art by Beatriz Whitehill symbolizes that very poetically.
On Saturday, March 4th, deem spencer will host an intimate event at Public Records. The event will include a behind the scenes look at the making of the album, a conversation with deem’s collaborators – producer Spenser Williams, and director Mike Weir – and special live performance of select songs in advance to his headlining show at Elsewhere on April 20th. deem spencer last released Deem’s Tape in 2021 to critical acclaim.The album was included in i-D Magazine’s best album of the summer, Jamz Supernova interviewed deem and highlighted him as a Best New Artist on BBC Radio. Pigeons & Planes also highlighted deem in their “Making It” series. Additionally, deem also released a new song “Se Réveiller” via COLORS. Amidst that, deem spencer also joined Orion Sun on six sold out dates of her North American tour.
