A former Chicago radio dj admitted Monday soliciting a 13-year-old Carol Stream boy for sex after befriending the child on the Internet.
Michael D. Wawrzyniak, 24, of Chicago, faces a possible sentence of probation or two to five years in prison when sentenced later this year. He also must register as a convicted sex offender for 10 years. Wawrzyniak began chatting with the child on the Internet in December 2007. The two had sexual contact once after Wawrzyniak drove to an agreed location on a side street near the boy’s home, prosecutors said.
Afterward, the boy’s parents learned of the inappropriate contact and alerted police. Detective Steven Cadle used the boy’s password and screen name and began chatting with Wawrzyniak on the Internet. Another rendezvous was arranged. “The detective took the child’s Internet persona and had Internet chats with the defendant in which their conversations involved talking about (a sex act),” prosecutor Enza LaMonica said. “The defendant did arrive for that prearranged meeting and was arrested.”
Police arrested Wawrzyniak about 1 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008 on the same residential side street in Carol Stream where the boy said they met earlier. At the time, Wawrzyniak worked part time as a weekend radio disc jockey for 103.5 KISS-FM. He was terminated after his arrest, officials said.
Prosecutors were unable to charge Wawrzyniak with molesting the child because he initially lied to Wawrzyniak about his real age. The boy said he was at least 18. Prosecutors, though, said Wawrzyniak later admitted during the online chats with the undercover officer that he could tell the boy, who was small in stature, was a minor.
Wawrzyniak, who used the moniker “Radio Boy,” was set free one day after his arrest after his family posted the required 10 percent of a $150,000 bond. He is barred from having contact with minors while on bond.
He pleaded guilty Monday to felony indecent child solicitation charges. Despite the plea, the prosecution and defense attorney Sam Amirante could not agree on an appropriate punishment.
DuPage Circuit Judge Blanche Hill Fawell will sentence Wawrzyniak later this year. Wawrzyniak, of the 1700 block of South Michigan Avenue, did not have a prior criminal record.
