The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) has reshaped its leadership structure for the 2026-2027 cycle, a move that directly strengthens advocacy for over 600 independent record labels across the United States. By electing Glen Barros of Exceleration Music as the new chair of its Executive Committee, the trade group signals a renewed commitment to protecting indie rights, streaming revenue, and market access in an industry increasingly dominated by major conglomerates. This leadership update ensures that independent publishers, radio programmers, and Black music professionals have a more robust voice when negotiating with distributors and platforms.
New Leadership Brings Diverse Indie Expertise
Barros, the Managing Partner of Exceleration Music, takes the chair role previously held by a predecessor who stepped down after a decade leading the organization. He joins Louis Posen, Founder and President of Hopeless Records, who serves as Treasurer, and David Barnes, Chief Operating Officer of Rhymesayers Entertainment, who acts as Secretary. The board also welcomed four new members representing key sectors of the independent ecosystem: Katie Garcia of Bayonet Records, Tony Kiewel of Sub Pop, Steve Kline of Better Noise Music, and Elliott Peters of EMPIRE. These executives bring critical experience in label operations, legal strategy, and global marketing that will help A2IM navigate complex legal disputes and rights management challenges.
Advisory Board Reinforces Industry Advocacy
Beyond the executive committee, A2IM expanded its Advisory Board to include Sue Lucarelli of Epitaph Records and Benson Curb of Curb, while welcoming back Oscar Guitian of Serving Sounds. These additions ensure that the organization maintains deep connections with established indie labels and revenue-focused entities. The board serves a two-year term, while advisory members serve one year, allowing for consistent governance and fresh perspectives. With independent labels now holding the largest share of the US recorded-music market, surpassing Universal Music Group, this leadership team is positioned to advocate effectively for the needs of independent artists and ensure their interests remain central in marketplace negotiations.
