Father Convicted of Attempted Murder of Newborn

Incident Overview

Curtis Jack, a father from South Fulton, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for attempting to murder his newborn daughter by poisoning her milk with antifreeze. Jack admitted to police that he did this because he did not want to pay child support.

Investigation and Confession

The incident began when Jack’s coworker, with whom he had an affair, became pregnant. Throughout the pregnancy, Jack pressured her to terminate it. After the baby was born, the mother had to stay in the hospital and asked Jack to pick up breast milk and deliver it to the baby at the grandmother’s house. Jack confessed to adding antifreeze to the milk to avoid child support responsibilities.

Legal Proceedings

Although Jack initially confessed to the crime, he later recanted his confession after being indicted on several charges, including attempted murder. This required the detectives and the District Attorney’s office to gather additional evidence to secure a conviction.

Impact on Investigators

The case was particularly challenging for the investigators, many of whom are parents themselves. South Fulton Police Sergeant Sera Dickerson, the lead detective, described the emotional toll of working on the case while maintaining professional empathy and determination to ensure justice.

Motive and Circumstances

Detectives were puzzled by Jack’s motive, as both he and the mother had good-paying jobs. Additionally, at the time of the crime, Jack was engaged to another woman, which may have influenced his actions.

Current Status of the Child

The child’s mother has confirmed that the baby is currently doing well. Despite the father’s actions, the quick response from the police and medical personnel ensured the child’s survival.

The South Fulton community and law enforcement officials expressed their relief at the conviction, hoping it serves as a deterrent to similar acts in the future.
