FIU Students Perform at Radio City Music Hall with Yandel

On Valentine’s Day, students from the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts at Florida International University (FIU) had the opportunity to perform at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in New York City alongside international artists Yandel and J Balvin as part of the Yandel Sinfónico tour. This genre-blending project combines reggaeton with orchestral elements, and has already garnered a Grammy nomination, underscoring its innovative approach to music.

The collaboration was orchestrated by FIU Symphony Orchestra conductor Javier Mendoza, who has worked closely with Yandel on his latest album. Mendoza invited both students and recent graduates from various disciplines, including performance majors and music business students, to participate in this high-profile event, highlighting the school’s commitment to providing real-world experiences in the music industry.

Participants in the performance noted the unique learning opportunities presented by the collaboration. Students expressed how the experience expanded their understanding of professional musicianship, particularly in terms of production, staging, and audience engagement. The project also emphasized the importance of networking within the music industry, as students connected with industry professionals and fellow musicians during their time in New York.

The performance not only showcased the talents of current students but also featured FIU alumni, including a percussionist who returned to perform with the orchestra. This event exemplifies the university’s focus on preparing musicians to thrive in a diverse and evolving music landscape, encouraging them to step beyond traditional boundaries and explore cross-genre collaborations.
