A recent report from Youth Music has unveiled significant issues surrounding discrimination, unsafe working conditions, and inadequate pay affecting young creatives in the music industry. Titled Just the Way It Is?, the report is based on testimonies from 69 young individuals and indicates that these challenges disproportionately impact women, LGBTQ+, disabled, global majority, and working-class creatives.
Key findings reveal that 72% of respondents reported encountering unsafe working environments, while 90% indicated experiences of unfair compensation, often feeling unable to voice their concerns. The report highlights a troubling culture of silence within the industry, where fear of repercussions discourages young artists from advocating for their rights.
In addition to the alarming statistics, the report features personal accounts illustrating the harsh realities faced by young creatives. Many express feelings of isolation and harassment, with some recounting experiences of being exploited by more established artists. These narratives underscore the urgent need for change within the industry.
Despite the challenges, the report also notes a positive trend, with 85% of young creatives citing inspiration from artists who have publicly addressed industry malpractice. This phenomenon, referred to as ‘The Raye Effect’, reflects a growing willingness among young artists to speak out against injustices.
The report calls for immediate collective action to address systemic issues within the music industry. Recommendations include ensuring fair pay, promoting transparency, and fostering safe workplace cultures. It also urges funders and policymakers to enhance protections for young creatives, while encouraging artists to be aware of their rights and report misconduct.
