Youth Music Report Highlights Discrimination and Unsafe Conditions

A recent report from Youth Music has raised significant concerns regarding the experiences of young creatives within the music industry, particularly focusing on issues of discrimination, unsafe working conditions, and inadequate pay. Titled Just the Way It Is?, the report compiles testimonies from 69 individuals, revealing that marginalized groups, including women, LGBTQ+ individuals, disabled persons, and those from working-class backgrounds, are disproportionately affected by these challenges.

Key findings indicate that 72% of young creatives report encountering unsafe working environments, while 90% believe they have been subjected to unfair compensation practices without feeling empowered to voice their concerns. The testimonies illustrate a pervasive culture of silence, where individuals fear retribution for speaking out against malpractice.

The report also highlights the influence of established artists in inspiring younger generations to challenge industry norms. A significant 85% of respondents noted they were motivated by artists who have publicly addressed industry injustices. This trend, referred to as ‘The Raye Effect,’ suggests a growing willingness among young creatives to advocate for change.

In response to these alarming findings, the report calls for immediate and collective action to address these systemic issues. It emphasizes the need for employers to implement fair pay practices, ensure workplace safety, and foster transparency. Additionally, it urges funders and policymakers to enhance protections for young artists, while encouraging creatives to understand their rights and report misconduct.
