Maren’s not holding back on the country scene’s toxicity—she’s calling it out again.
Maren Morris has recently voiced her frustrations regarding the current dynamics within the country music industry, making headlines once more for her candid remarks. This comes on the heels of her previous declaration in 2023 that she was stepping away from the country scene, labeling it a “toxic institution.” Although she later softened her stance, her latest comments signal that her discontent remains strong.
In a recent TikTok video, Maren reacted to a fan’s comment about finding the right audience for her music. Instead of focusing solely on her artistry, she shed light on the interpersonal relationships among artists in the industry. She described the atmosphere at award shows as “very dicey,” implying a lack of camaraderie among her peers.
“Like, no one is very friendly. Some people are cool, but it’s been very dicey at these award shows and s—. And I don’t really go to them anymore, but it’s been very heated,” she explained. Despite her frustrations, Maren emphasized her affection for country music, indicating that her critiques stem from a place of love and concern.
Her forthright style has made it clear that she’s unafraid to express her opinions, regardless of potential backlash. This latest eruption of thoughts is a continuation of her earlier comments where she likened the country music industry to an abusive relationship. Back in 2022, she told the Los Angeles Times, “I hate feeling like I need to be the hall monitor of treating people like human beings in country music. It’s exhausting. But there’s a very insidious culture of people feeling very comfortable being transphobic and homophobic and racist.”
Maren’s willingness to speak her mind raises questions about her standing within the country music community. With such blunt criticisms, it’s difficult to envision her peers rushing to form friendships with her. As she continues to address the flaws she sees in the industry, one must wonder how many artists align themselves with her views, especially given her track record of calling out the entire scene.
