YouTube Music has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered playlist generator exclusively for Premium subscribers on iOS and Android platforms. This feature allows users to create personalized playlists by articulating their music preferences through text or voice inputs, accessible via the Library tab’s ‘New’ button.
This development positions YouTube Music alongside competitors such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer, which have previously implemented similar tools. Spotify’s AI-driven playlist features have evolved over the past year, enhancing user engagement and personalization.
The rollout of this feature coincides with YouTube Music’s strategy to enrich its Premium subscription offerings. Recently, the platform began limiting access to song lyrics for free users, an experiment affecting a small segment of ad-supported accounts, while maintaining availability for the majority of free users.
YouTube Music has emerged as a key growth component for Alphabet, contributing significantly to the company’s subscription revenue stream, which is now estimated at approximately $20 billion annually. The recent earnings report highlighted a surge in YouTube subscriptions, driven in part by the growing demand for AI-enhanced features.
In addition to the playlist generator, YouTube Music has been experimenting with other AI capabilities, including an AI music commentary feature and an AI-generated radio function, enhancing the overall user experience. With ongoing investments in AI technology, YouTube aims to further innovate its music platform in the coming years.
