AI Music Surges to 57% in China’s Indie Scene

China’s independent music scene is embracing AI in a big way; over half of new releases are machine-made.

Recent reports reveal that a staggering 56.9% of independently released new songs in China during the first quarter of 2025 were generated by artificial intelligence. The data, reported by the state-owned outlet People’s Daily, highlights a significant shift in the country’s music industry. This figure marks a notable rise compared to previous statistics, which indicated that around one-third of new uploads on platforms like Deezer were AI-generated.

The article from People’s Daily emphasizes the positive potential of AI for the music sector, indicating a growing acceptance of technology in creative spaces. While Western platforms have shown concern about the implications of AI on music, the narrative in China appears to focus on opportunities rather than pitfalls. The publication notes that Tencent Music’s GenAI tool has attracted over 10 million users and has produced more than 26 million tracks, which have collectively garnered over a billion streams. This suggests a robust engagement with AI-driven music among listeners.

While industry professionals in the West may view the surge of AI-generated content with caution, in China, the trend is framed as an exciting development. The narrative suggests that AI is opening new avenues for creativity, and the scale of its adoption points to a broader acceptance within the market. The Chinese government’s stance, as reflected in the article, seems to favor this technological integration as a means to modernize the music industry.

As streaming platforms continue to evolve, the rise of AI-generated music could redefine how songs are created and distributed. It will be interesting to observe how this trend may influence music consumption patterns in China, particularly as listeners engage with songs produced by algorithms. The future of music in China, bolstered by AI, may present new challenges and opportunities in the global marketplace.
