5G Broadcast Gears Up for European Launch by 2027

5G Broadcast is set to make waves in Europe, with plans for a commercial rollout by 2027. While the U.S. lags, Europe’s gearing up for a major transformation.

The 5G Broadcast Strategic Task Force (5BSTF) is advancing plans for its first commercial services across Europe, aiming for a launch within the next two years. Supported by prominent industry players including Rohde & Schwarz, Media Broadcast, TDF, Cordiant Capital, Emitel, CRA, BTCY, and RAI, the task force is focusing on a joint roadmap that encompasses six key European markets, which together represent a population of over 270 million.

Established in September 2024, the 5BSTF’s primary mission is to ensure the market readiness of 5G Broadcast technology. The initiative began with a collaborative effort from Germany and France, and it quickly expanded as other partners recognized the potential impact of 5G on broadcasting. On March 18, the task force celebrated the successful completion of its first “Sprint,” which aimed to achieve population coverage for 125 million residents across Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Belgium.

This collaboration has uncovered a new addressable market expected to emerge following the second quarter of 2027—a significant milestone for the broadcasting industry. According to the 5BSTF, the private broadcast network operators involved are ready to transform portions of their existing infrastructure into 5G Broadcast connectivity. This shift will enable content providers and broadcasters to deliver tailored services, particularly focusing on live and linear audiovisual content that attracts dedicated audiences.

While developments in the U.S. seem to be stagnating, the progress made by the 5BSTF has begun to draw attention from other regions, particularly Asia and Latin America. The task force notes that this growing interest could further amplify its scale, enticing a broader range of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and enhancing the overall addressable market. As stakeholders continue to collaborate, the excitement surrounding the potential of 5G Broadcast in Europe is palpable.
