A riff’s department has been left in shock after an off-duty deputy shot and killed a married couple on Wednesday in Dublin, roughly 25 miles southeast of Oakland. Alameda County riff’s spokesman, Lt. Ray Kelly, told reporters that Devin Williams Jr., 24, allegedly killed the woman, 42, and her 58-year-old husband in their home. Kelly was left mortified by the incident. Williams was not working at the time of the shooting.
“Our agency is in shock,” Kelly said. “This is not something we deal with. This is not what we’re about. We had no idea that this could happen.”
The shooting started a manhunt across suburban Northern California that lasted for an hour and ended with a nearly 60-minute phone conversation that resulted in his surrender, said officials.
Williams has had “some significant things” occur in his life in recent months that have apparently caused an “emotional crisis.”
“A lot of those events went undiscovered and undisclosed,” Kelly said.
Kelly has not provided additional details about the couple who he claimed had “connectivity” with Williams. Their names have not been released.
Williams worked two shifts on Tuesday. The first shift was a courthouse shift, said Kelly. Then he worked an overtime shift at the county jail until 11 p.m. It was not clear how Williams was able to enter the home or when he arrived at the residence.
Around 12:45 a.m., authorities received a report of gunfire. Six people were in the home at the time. One of the key witnesses of the shooting was a relative visiting from out-of-town, said Kelly.
In a news release, the Dublin Police Department said the couple was pronounced dead at the scene.
