Actor Anthony Hopkins has secured a major label partnership with Decca Classics to release his debut classical album, marking a significant business milestone for an 88-year-old artist transitioning from screen to composer. This deal validates the commercial viability of long-held, unpublished compositions and offers a new revenue stream for rights holders managing legacy creative works. The album, titled Life Is a Dream, will be released on August 21, featuring original orchestral works Hopkins has been developing for over sixty years.
A Lifetime of Composition Finally Released
Hopkins revealed that music was his “first desire” and “first wish,” a sentiment that drove him to sign with Decca after years of private creation. The collection includes pieces inspired by his childhood in South Wales, traditional Welsh melodies, and personal memories of his family home in the 1940s. The first single, “Bracken Road,” from his 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra, was released on Friday. The album features performances by conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra, with cellist Gregorio Nieto and pianist Sergio Tiempo contributing as soloists.
From Classic Brit Winner to Decca Signee
This is not Hopkins’ first appearance in the music industry; he previously won a Classic Brit Award in 2012 for album of the year after composing the title waltz for And the Waltz Goes On, recorded by violinist AndrĂ© Rieu. His label noted that Hopkins began playing piano at age four and started performing Beethoven and Chopin shortly thereafter. As a teenager, he composed music for local plays, establishing a lifelong pattern of creative output that now culminates in this major recording project.
Gustavo Dudamel described Hopkins as a “rare artist” whose creative voice transcends any single medium, noting that the same depth of imagination found in his screen work is present in his music. Hopkins stated that signing with Decca is the “honor of a lifetime” and expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the distinguished orchestra and soloists. The project brings his passion for classical music to the forefront, offering a unique narrative for radio programmers and streaming platforms to highlight an actor achieving his ultimate artistic goal.
