Looks like Sony Music is doubling down on its German operations, snagging F.A.M.E. Recordings to beef up its catalog.
Sony Music Germany has officially acquired Munich-based label F.A.M.E. Recordings, a deal that stems from a long-standing partnership that began 15 years ago. The announcement was made on January 14 and highlights Sony’s commitment to expanding its influence within the German music scene.
The acquisition encompasses a diverse collection of music, including debut albums from bands like Schandmaul and Pam Pam Ida, as well as works from notable artists such as Feuerschwanz, Werner Schmidbauer, Hannes Ringlstetter, Die Happy, Thomas Godoj, Willy Astor, and Coppelius. This robust catalog showcases the significant contributions of F.A.M.E. Recordings to German music history.
Founded in 2001 by drummer Curt Cress and Tom Büscher, F.A.M.E. Recordings had been under the distribution of Sony Music for over a decade before this acquisition. Following the deal, F.A.M.E. will cease active operations and will not be releasing new music, although experts Antje Zelnitschek and Matej Bellus are set to provide freelance support to Sony Music.
Thorsten Sack, Vice President of Catalog at Sony Music Germany, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, “With the acquisition of F.A.M.E., we are securing a catalog that contains real highlights of German music history. Our goal is to revitalize these recordings with re-editions and special releases that will delight fans.” Such efforts reveal Sony’s intention not only to preserve but also to enhance the legacy of the music it now owns.
This acquisition bolsters Sony Music’s presence in the regional market, particularly in Munich and southern Germany. The move aligns with the broader strategies within Sony Music Group, which has been actively expanding its portfolio. The recent purchase of Nashville-based Big Yellow Dog Music and a stake in Finland’s Elements Music exemplifies this trend.
Sony Music Germany is also making waves by launching a new record label, noted. records, aimed at the electronic music genre, set to kick off in 2024 from its Berlin headquarters. Furthermore, this acquisition follows a series of strategic consolidations aimed at optimizing resources across genres. This includes merging the teams behind its local hip-hop label Gold League with RCA Records Germany and reviving the iconic Hansa Records as a frontline label to strengthen its pop offerings.
