A recent report titled ‘Just the Way It Is?’ by Youth Music has revealed significant issues regarding misogyny, unsafe work environments, and unfair compensation in the music industry. The report, produced in collaboration with the Musicians� Union and Music Guardians, is based on qualitative data from 19 in-depth focus group testimonies and quantitative data from a social media poll involving 50 respondents.
Key findings indicate that over 70% of young creatives reported feeling unsafe in their working environments, while 90% felt unable to voice concerns about unfair practices. Additionally, 90% of respondents claimed they had experienced unfair pay, prompting 75% to consider abandoning their music careers due to these adverse conditions.
The report emphasizes the need for urgent collective action within the industry to address these issues. It calls for employers to ensure fair pay, transparent contracts, and the establishment of safe workplace cultures. The insights gathered also highlight the prevalence of harassment and exploitation in the industry, particularly affecting marginalized groups.
In response to the findings, organizations and initiatives have emerged to support mental health and well-being among music professionals. For example, the Music Industry Therapy Collective launched a 24-hour mental health support service for touring professionals. However, the Youth Music report underscores that more comprehensive measures are necessary to foster a safer and more equitable environment for young artists.
