James Steven Named Communications Chief at UMG

Universal’s just snagged a top-notch exec from Warner, signaling a fresh strategic direction.

Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced the appointment of James Steven as its Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. Steven, who spent the last decade at Warner Music Group (WMG) in the same role, will join UMG on January 26 and will be stationed in New York.

In his new position, Steven will lead UMG’s internal and external communications. He’ll also manage the communications operations across UMG’s various global branches. His extensive experience in the music industry is expected to play a significant role in shaping UMG’s narrative and strategic messaging as the company continues to evolve.

Will Tanous, UMG’s Chief Administrative Officer, expressed enthusiasm over Steven’s arrival, emphasizing his impressive skills in strategic communications and storytelling. Tanous remarked, “His love of music and his broad experience across media and technology makes him an ideal fit for UMG as we enter the next phase of growth, driven by strategic initiatives that will unlock new opportunities for artists, songwriters, and fans alike.”

UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge also welcomed Steven to the team, indicating that the company sought an executive with the right mix of experience and insight to help drive its vision forward. Grainge noted, “Given Will’s broadened role, it was important that we brought in a communications executive with experience and perspective – one who was able to step right in to help us continue to shape the future of music.”

During his time at Warner, Steven played a crucial role during a transformative period for the company. He managed investor relations during Warner’s IPO in the summer of 2020, as well as the CEO transition in 2022. Additionally, he has been involved with the Recording Industry Association of America as a board member.

Steven began his career with WMG in London in 2007, advancing through various roles until he became Chief Communications Officer. Before joining WMG, he held senior positions in multiple PR firms, working with clients across a range of industries, including technology, entertainment, and automotive.
