UK Music Streaming Hits 210B in 2025, Growth Slows

The UK music streaming scene reached a staggering 210 billion streams in 2025, but the growth rate has noticeably slowed.

The British music industry saw over 210 billion audio streams in 2025, marking a significant milestone as the sector experiences both booms and slowdowns. According to new data from the British recorded music trade group, BPI, annual streams increased by 5.5% year-on-year from 199.6 billion in 2024 to 210.3 billion in 2025. This figure reflects an increase of 10.7 billion streams compared to the previous year.

Despite crossing the 200 billion mark, the growth rate has decreased compared to the previous years. In 2024, the audio stream volume rose by 11.0% year-on-year, and the sector enjoyed a remarkable 12.8% growth in 2023. Streaming now constitutes an impressive 89.3% of all music consumption in the UK, according to BPI’s calculations based on ‘Album Equivalent Sales’. In their methodology, BPI defines one album equivalent as 1,000 streams from a paid service or 6,000 streams from an ad-supported tier.

The report also highlighted the trends in physical music sales. While vinyl sales surged by 13.3%, reaching 7.6 million units, CD sales fell by 7.6% to 9.7 million. Neil Gibbons, COO of Key Production Group, noted the sustained demand for vinyl, emphasizing how audiences are building deeper connections with artists by exploring entire albums and collecting various formats.

Among the recent successes in vinyl sales, Taylor Swift’s album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” topped the UK charts in 2025, achieving sales of over 147,000 units and marking a record for vinyl sales since 1994. This reflects a broader trend where modern consumers are gravitating towards physical music products while also consuming vast amounts of digital content.

The BPI’s report also points to a thriving ecosystem for new talent. Artists like Lola Young and Olivia Dean are making significant impacts, with Dean breaking records by achieving both a No. 1 album and single in the same week. The report acknowledges a notable increase in female representation among chart-toppers, with Taylor Swift setting a record for the first artist to have the biggest album in two consecutive years with different releases.

Despite the overall recorded music industry making strides, the report expresses concern over the decline in the UK’s market share of global music streaming. In 2024, music from the US, UK, and Canada accounted for 56.2% of global streams, down from 57.5% in 2023. Dr. Jo Twist, BPI Chief Executive, emphasized the need for government support and a robust copyright framework to ensure the continued success of the UK music industry in a rapidly evolving market.
