In late 2023, the boards of directors of Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio finalized their merger, leading to the establishment of Ocean State Media in July 2025. This new entity consolidates public broadcasting efforts in Rhode Island, enhancing the reach and capabilities of both radio and television services.
The radio division operates five FM signals across the state, supplemented by an AM station in Providence. In a strategic move to expand coverage, Ocean State Media has announced plans to acquire WVEI(FM) from Audacy, which will further bolster its statewide presence.
As part of the merger, the radio operations relocated from Union Station in downtown Providence to the Rhode Island PBS studios. This transition involved significant renovations, including the construction of a new main studio and a multipurpose room designed for editing and backup. The project also transformed two existing TV audio production suites into functional radio studios, incorporating modern technology and infrastructure.
The studio integration utilized a Telos Livewire system, featuring Axia StudioCore engines and a range of advanced audio equipment to create a flexible, efficient workspace. The design focused on optimizing limited space while ensuring that both studios could serve multiple purposes, enhancing operational efficiency.
Additionally, Ocean State Media repurposed existing infrastructure, including a dormant satellite downlink dish, to streamline NPR content delivery and reduce costs. With ongoing support from Inrush Broadcast Services, the organization is positioned to navigate the evolving landscape of public media while maintaining a commitment to quality content and audience service.
