Nashville’s vibrant music scene is set to welcome one of its own to the national spotlight as Kelly Sutton makes her debut on the popular show “American Idol.” Known for her extensive career in broadcasting, Sutton has spent over a decade as the host of the Fox 17 morning show in Nashville, followed by a four-year stint co-hosting Channel 4’s midday program. Currently, she serves as a live show announcer for the Grand Ole Opry, a sidekick on WSM-AM’s morning show, and a national host for Amazon Music’s country channel. Additionally, she is an accomplished podcaster and actor.
On March 9, Sutton will take on the role of a music industry tastemaker on ABC’s “American Idol,” where she will join esteemed judges Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan, both of whom are longtime friends of hers. Sutton’s involvement in the show marks a significant milestone in her career, as she has been a familiar face on ABC’s Country Music Association awards specials, where she has interviewed countless country music stars and industry figures.
As a tastemaker, Sutton will have the opportunity to evaluate the top 30 contestants, alongside seven other industry experts, and help determine which ten will be eliminated from the competition. Reflecting on her experience, Sutton expressed her excitement, stating, “This was such a thrill! I’ve been covering ‘American Idol’ since Season 1, so to get to be a part of the tastemaker industry panel was really full circle for me. The contestants are so insanely talented this year! I know now how tough it is for Carrie, Luke, and Lionel to make those early cuts.”
The episode featuring Sutton is scheduled to air locally at 7 p.m. on March 9 on News 2, promising an exciting evening for fans of the show and country music alike. Sutton’s journey from local broadcaster to national tastemaker exemplifies the interconnectedness of Nashville’s music community and the broader entertainment industry.
