Shaan responds to AR Rahman on music industry unity

In response to AR Rahman’s recent comments regarding a perceived lack of work and a potential ‘communal’ bias in the music industry, singer Shaan has offered a composed viewpoint. Speaking to IANS, Shaan dismissed the notion of communal bias and encouraged people not to overanalyze the situation.

Shaan emphasized that the music industry operates on factors like choice, timing, and creativity rather than identity. He noted that all artists experience periods of decreased work, which should not be interpreted as personal or political. Addressing Rahman’s remarks, Shaan stated, ‘There is no such divide in music.’ He shared his own experiences, highlighting that despite his extensive career, he too faces challenges in securing work at times, which he does not take personally.

Further, Shaan pointed out that if identity were a significant factor, many successful artists from the past decades would not have thrived. He stated, ‘Music doesn’t work that way. Do good work, make good music, and don’t overthink these things.’ He also elaborated on the creative process, explaining that song choices are made based on what fits the composition, not external influences.

The conversation began after Rahman reflected on his career during an interview, mentioning a shift in power dynamics within the industry and suggesting that it might involve communal aspects. However, Shaan’s perspective refocused the discussion on the importance of craftsmanship and patience in music, reminding everyone that the quality of work speaks for itself.
