(New York, NY: Columbia Records; August 19, 2016) Columbia Records is releasing Music From The Motion Picture: Southside With You on August 26, the same day the acclaimed movie opens in theaters.  The official soundtrack to the MIRAMAX, Roadside Attractions and IM Global critically acclaimed movie, Southside With You – inspired by the first date of Barack and Michelle Obama – will be made available at all digital retailers. The 9 song soundtrack features the original song “Start” created especially for the film by Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe winning Columbia Records recording artist, John Legend, who also serves as executive producer on the film.

Evoking the daylong first date of Barack and Michelle Obama in the summer of 1989, the soundtrack is comprised of R&B, hip hop, and soul gems and classics, including “Miss You Much” (Janet Jackson), “A Love Like Yours (Don’t Come Knocking Everyday)” (Martha Reeves and The Vandellas), “Hey Young World” (Slick Rick), “Keep On Movin” (Soul II Soul), “Close The Door” (Teddy Pendergrass), and more (complete tracklisting below).

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2016 to rave reviews, the movie is already being hailed as an early Oscar contender. Written and directed by Richard Tanne, Parker Sawyers (Snowden, Zero Dark Thirty) and Tika Sumpter (Ride Along 2, TV’s “The Haves and Have Nots”) star as the future U.S. President and First Lady.  Produced by Robert Teitel (Men of Honor, the Barbershop franchise), Sumpter, and Tanne. Stuart Ford, Matt Jackson, Glendon Palmer, Mike Jackson, Carrie Holt De Lama, Tracey Bing, and MIRAMAX’s Zanne Devine and Rosanne Korenberg serve, along with John Legend, as executive producers.

David Schulhof, President of IM Global Music and music supervisor of Southside With You commented: “In “Start” John Legend wrote and recorded an incredibly soulful love theme for the film.  The Southside album includes a lot of memorable music and was a fun project for us to produce.  IM Global Music is excited to be partners with John and with Sony on this heartfelt soundtrack.”

Heralded as ‘the best first date ever‘ by Vanity Fair, Southside With You recounts the eventful summer Chicago day in 1989 when a charming young law associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tries to woo reluctant attorney Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that takes them from an art exhibit to a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to a sweet first kiss outside of a Baskin-Robbins ice-cream parlor.
