In an exciting development for music enthusiasts, ChatGPT users can now identify songs directly within the app thanks to a new integration with Shazam, announced by Apple on March 9. This feature allows users to simply type prompts that include the word “Shazam,” such as “Shazam, what’s playing?” or “Shazam, what is this song?” to receive instant song recognition.
The integration enhances the user experience by displaying song artwork and audio previews inline within the chat interface. Users who already have the Shazam app installed on their devices can save their discoveries to their in-app library. Importantly, those who do not have the app can still utilize this functionality, as it does not require downloading Shazam to work.
Shazam expressed that this integration brings the speed and efficiency of its music recognition technology to ChatGPT, allowing users to identify and preview songs seamlessly without leaving the chatbot environment. This partnership is part of a broader strategy by OpenAI to expand its chatbot’s capabilities through third-party integrations, which began with the launch of its apps ecosystem in October 2025. Notable partners include Spotify, Booking.com, and Canva, among others.
Music has emerged as a key focus for OpenAI, with previous integrations allowing Spotify users to link their accounts for personalized music and podcast recommendations. Similarly, Apple Music joined the fold in December 2025, enabling subscribers to create playlists and search for music through prompts, mirroring the Spotify experience. However, the Shazam integration is distinct in its primary function of song identification.
This collaboration follows Shazam’s previous integration with Ticketmaster in 2024, which allowed users to access live event listings for artists they identify. Additionally, Shazam has expanded its capabilities to recognize music from video content on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Acquired by Apple in 2018, Shazam boasts a user base of “hundreds of millions” worldwide. The global rollout of the ChatGPT integration began on iOS, Android, and web devices on Monday, marking a significant step in Apple’s ongoing embrace of artificial intelligence in its services.
